Indicatoren Vlaanderen

About the project

For the Department of Environment, a government agency of Flanders, I built the front end of the environmental indicators website for Flanders.

And I have to confess two things:

  1. This was my very first project in Drupal. And my first time working with a web components library. I was absolutely clueless at first, hearing thunder roll somewhere far away while I was coding away in Herentals at iO. According to Google Maps, that thunder was about 190 km away.
  2. I still don’t really know what indicators are. Okay, I get that they’re supposed to give an indication of various things in Flanders, but I honestly thought it was just the project’s working title. I didn’t realize it was an actual thing. Or, as you can read right in the hero text of the site: “The indicators on this website describe and analyze the state of the environment and environmental policy using facts and figures.”

Anyway, back to point 1: I had just started at iO, my first job back as a developer and jumped into a team that needed a front-end dev. Enter Matthias, who spent his evenings and weekends Googling and YouTubing everything he needed to know to meet the expectations that came with the job.

And yes, I dare to say successfully. I learned a ton on this project and, from what I heard, my work barely needed any adjustments after the project was delivered. Sure, I made a few mistakes here and there, but overall, I’m pretty proud of this one.
